Jean N. Gauchat is a professional dog trainer and dog show handler with more than 25 years of experience. She has trained more than 6,000 dogs and has raised, handled and conditioned multiple breeds for competitions.

Jean offers a wide range of dog training and obedience classes in Sacramento, California. Training classes start for puppies as young as 8 weeks old. A full list of classes is shown below.

Her positive reinforcement training methods are a fun, rewarding experience that will strengthen the bond you and your dog share. This approach to behavior modification is much less stressful on the dogs, not to mention the dog owners! We don’t use pinch collars or choke chains.

Would you rather have private training for your dog, with one-on-one, individual attention from an expert trainer with over 25 years experience? We cover such issues as running away, digging, barking, nipping, jumping, house soiling, chewing, counter surfing, cat chasing and all basic obedience commands.

Puppy Preschool Class

Recommended as soon as your puppy’s vaccines have started – don’t wait until 16 weeks! Get started socializing and training your puppy early, in a safe learning environment. Socialize your puppy with others the same age, and meet fellow puppy owners. Learn how to prevent and deal with common puppy problems, like house soiling, potty training, chewing, nipping with those sharp teeth, digging, jumping up and barking. Definitely the cutest class in town!

Puppy Star Class

Learn how to prevent common puppy problems like house soiling, chewing, nipping, digging, jumping up, and of course, barking. Learn commands like “sit” and “down”, and the all-important recall upon request, “come”. Practice handling attention and tolerating a collar. Socialize your puppy with others the same age and with new puppy owners. Teach your puppy to walk nicely on a leash, enjoy being groomed, and even try some puppy agility! This class also qualifies for the AKC S.T.A.R Puppy program.

Puppy Kindergarten Class


Continue puppy’s education. Working in new environments with a calm and confident attitude will avoid separation anxiety! Continue training your puppy to be a well-mannered member of your household, focusing on things like impulse control, cuddles, allowing an exam, boundary training, potty training, chewing, nipping, digging, jumping up, and barking. Continued socialization with other puppies of the same age and with new puppy owners.

Basic Manners Class

Just finished the puppy series? Want to start training and bonding with your new companion the right way? Effective communication is key – learn how your dog thinks, so you can teach them in a way that is easy for them to learn. Often, it can be tough trying to control those testing teenagers. This class focuses on behavior problem solving, impulse control, barking, jumping, counter surfing, and obedience commands such as “come”, “heel”, “sit”, “down”, “stay”, “watch me”, “no jumping”, “go to bed”, and “leave it”. Teach your dog to come when called with enthusiasm, no matter the distraction!

Beyond Basic Manners Class

Advancing your dog obedience skills includes more socialization skills, both dog-to-dog and dog-to-people. You will learn more behaviors and tricks, such as teaching your dog to walk politely on a leash, “heel” both on and off-leash, “watch me”, “no jumping” (teaching your dog not to jump up on people), “stay” from a sit or down, “down” on recall, “stand still”, “go to bed”, “leave it” (how to ignore food and other distractions), “take it” (how to gently take things such as food and toys), how to properly play tug, food games, and sit/down from motion cues, play hide and seek, and more.

Learn from one of the best dog show handlers in Northern California. If you need to get your puppy into the show ring, this is a great place to start. Both beginner and experienced show dogs and handlers will gain valuable experience with each class you attend, learning tips and tricks to be a winning team at the dog show!

Agility Class

Agility is a fun team sport, offering great mental and physical exercise for dogs and their owners. If you’re tired of obedience training, and want something new for your active dog, then agility training is a wonderful option! You and your dog will be trained to navigate through an obstacle course including apparatus such as weave poles, tunnels, jumps, the dog walk, and the A-frame. Your dog won’t be the only one learning something new! Dog owners are guided to become agility handlers, providing a fresh way to bond and communicate with your dog. Many of our dog and handler teams choose to enter competitive agility trials, earning AKC, NADAC and other agility titles.

Canine Good Citizen

Canine Good Citizen, or CGC, is a ten-skill training program open to all dogs – purebred and mixed breed – that focuses on teaching the basics of good manners and obedience, instilling the values of responsible ownership, and strengthening the bond between you and your dog at home and out in the community. After mastering the ten skills, passing the CGC test together, and taking the Responsible Dog Ownership pledge, you and your pup will join the proud ranks of over 1 million dogs who have earned their Canine Good Citizen award – an accomplishment that’s definitely worthy of extra belly rubs!
