Jean Gauchat Hargis
Our trainer, Jean Gauchat Hargis is here to offer you and your family assistance with any questions or behavior problems you may have. Over 25 years of experience training more than 6,000 dogs in classes, handling, raising and conditioning many different breeds for competitions. If you need advice before you get your puppy, in choosing the right breed from a reputable breeder or if you have your furry friend in hand we can help you achieve your goals. We don’t use pinch collar and choke chain kind of training and instead use all positive reinforcement. We find this training is much less stressful on the dogs as well as your family. Training is a fun, rewarding experience that will strengthen the bond you and your dog share.
Whether you are looking for a well-behaved companion or an event competitor, Jean’s method of positive reinforcement will help you achieve your goal. Our training classes start for puppies as young as 8 weeks old. Below is a description of the classes we currently offer. If you are interested in enrolling in a class we would like to take a moment to thank you for choosing to train your dog with us.
DUE TO THE COVID-19 OUTBREAKWe have made changes to the size of our classes to accommodate the social distancing requirements. Some of our large attendance classes are temporarily suspended due to the shelter in place order—we are offering online group and private lessons through Zoom, as well as one-on-one in person private lessons.
However, we are still offering private training one-on-one, board and train, remote training classes and private lessons through Zoom. Some of our classes will be conducted live online using Zoom. In order to participate, you will need a high-speed internet connection and a computer or mobile device like a smartphone or tablet. Upon registration and attendance of the first lesson, we will not offer full refunds. This class is $200 for 4 sessions total. Each session is approximately 50 minutes.
In an effort to make the check-in process easier, we need your completed registration form, dog’s vaccine records and payment prior to the start of your training class. You are welcome to email us the form and vaccine records and pay over the phone, or stop by our hospital location at your convenience. For the Puppy Star Class, your dog must be vaccinated with at least one DHPP. For all other classes, your dog must be current on Bordetella, DHPP, and Rabies at 16 weeks and older, that have been administered by a veterinarian. We recommend pets receive these vaccines at least 2 weeks prior for full immunity, when possible.
Please don’t feed your puppy right before class. This is for a number of reasons. Instead, bring their kibble to class in a ziploc bag for use as lures and rewards while training. Also bring a few extra-tasty treats to reward your pup for their best performances. Make sure your treats are in small, bite-sized pieces that won’t fill your pup up or take long for them to eat. We also recommend bringing a small water bowl for personal use.
PLEASE! Bring your puppy’s vaccine documents and the signed copy of the registration form to the first lesson
Reminder: Your first Puppy Preschool, Puppy Star, Basic Manners session is WITHOUT your dog for orientation. All other classes Puppy Kindergarten, Beyond Basic, Agility please bring your dog to the first lesson.
